Heya!

This is all you're getting from them on this topic: technology and sorcery picked up sharply in Ellethia in recent years, pushing Taravast's Conclave to pressure its magicians to match or exceed Ellethia's performance. This led to the dog-eat-dog relationship between the Bessis and Attaryl. The necromantic district was disengaged from the conflict and experienced this peripherally. The Bessis and Attaryl were in the middle of full Taravast-wide carnage, with the Bessis largely winning on account of sheer brute force and with Hatisse calling in the armies of Arha to reinforce the Attaryl — when Ellethia fell.

The ghosts don't know why. I'll save you the trouble of asking OOCly, though you're free to ICly have Wei Wuxian pursue this line of investigation — no Taravast native knows why Ellethia succumbed first. It shocked the Conclave into forcing the Bessis and Attaryl to take a common stand against whatever threat was prospectively incoming, leading to the witches' current tenuous alliance.

Unfortunately, Arha was already at Taravast's gates by that point.

And you know what had to happen there.
