But honestly, I don't think it would occur to him to try thralling anything he can't already do for himself anyway, immediately assuming you need to have the ability yourself before you can thrall things with it bc yeah, he doesn't know how it works. Those sorcerers/sorceresses that make translation crystals must just have a magical ability to understand languages.
So in his idle attempts at trying, he'll be working to try and thrall with magic he does have- fire/light, maybe healing bc healing crystals would be cool. Makes perfect sense though that without guidance or proper components, he'd still fail and it'll be a background thing to puzzle over until whenever works or someone appears that's willing to offer that guidance. Seems realistic in attempting a new way to apply magic in a foreign land, and a fun thing to have him working on in idle times.
