storm at sea conclusion + arc iv assignment prep
And now, to draw the curtain on our pirate travel arc, for the good folks at sea:
Deprived of his death-summoning artefact, pirate king Quicksilver Sam seeks refuge aboard the Pariah, as the drowned ships and kraken descend back into the haunted Crossing Seas.
Once ally, now debt collector Caladan Kreil demands the Pariah as his pledged payment. He and the Dawn’s Reach Trade Company broker a deal that allows Maximilian Hawk to search the Pariah for Quicksilver’s missing artefact. Mysteriously, it remains gone.
Unlike his predecessor, Caladan Kreil has struck no agreement with the party and wants them summarily gone off the Pariah and Queen Zanyra. Lingering party members can hitch a ride on one of the three commandeered and revitalised pirate ships. Alternatively, James Kirk has convinced Maximilian Hawk that the group comprises refugees — keep up the charade and the Concord will accept you for a quick journey to our Arc IV destination, the clockwork citadel of Serthica.
Last call: just as you’re packing your bags, Quicksilver Sam begs to escape by joining the party's ranks. He is infinitely clearer-headed, as if either the absence of his artefact or leaving the Crossing has returned his senses. Cast an IC vote on his fate here by 23:59 GMT on 8 August.
The Arc IV: Serthica brief drops on 9 August, and some of the initial setup will involve team assignment across the citadel’s halves.
✘ Background: Serthica is split between the twin citadel halves of Eidris and Minaras. Each belligerent city half succumbs underground for 12 hours, while the other is overground. While the civil war hostilities of years ago have formally ended, armed conflict and sabotage persist.
A good deal of the action will take place during a peace summit, and characters will also be able to cross citadel sides — but they will be formally assigned half in Eidris, half in Minaras. Both citadel halves have a steampunk technological level and aesthetic, but:
- ■ Eidris has Serthica’s dragons and dragon flight schools — just know that riding a dragon involves a mental link with the creature that will leave you and your thoughts fully exposed to it. Eidris is overground during the day and hosts Serthica’s nominal parliament. More of an exploration setting, chaos-prone characters would have an easier time here.
■ Minaras has ships, laboratories, academies and a higher number of clockwork droids — you will likely be delegated a clockwork droid companion tospy onserve you. Minaras boasts a slightly more disciplined environment, sits overground at night and has the seat of Serthica’s nominal government. Better characters with good espionage skills/poker faces, as it's a more watched environment.
■ ...yes, both citadels have sky whales.
Comment here by 23:59 GMT on 8 August, if you have a strong preference for your character's assignment.
Otherwise, they will get mod-assigned in one of the teams. As a heads up, if you have two characters, they’ll be split between the two locations, and we’ll have to RNG final assignments if one of the citadel halves is oversubscribed.
eta: to clarify further — you should only really need to vote on the team assignment if you would find the other option unplayable or extremely difficult to handle for your character. Hope that helps!
MASTER (QUICKSILVER) SAMUEL VANE
No longer exposed to the Crossing Seas or his artefact, Quicksilver Sam seems a greatly improved and saner man — one who begs the party's mercy, to accept him in their ranks as they flee.
If accepted, Quicksilver Sam will join the party as a NPC helper.
