Respect should be something given to everyone, not just teachers or leaders.

I agree. But, I have sat with Jiang Wanyin at conferences and he is respectful of all, whether they have offended my sect or not. He can be impartial when it comes to keeping the peace, it is how he rebuilt his childhood home into a grand sect again after it was burned down.

Perhaps his patience has its brevity, yet it is there and gives everyone a chance all the same.
