If he could do anything about the Visitors who roam around at night in my world, killing people, I'd have to give it careful consideration.

[ Sorry, Marc. He doesn't mean to belittle what you just said. It's just back home Lockwood and children like him are the protectors of the night. Might be nice to have a deity doing the job instead.

He doesn't. ( bluntly, because marc is the means by which khonshu enacts vengeance, the means by which he protects the travellers of the night, and it's both marc's singular purpose and the only thing he has.

he hates it, and yet. ) His Fists, on the other hand—. ( breath of a pause and a tight shrug punctuated by a thin sliver of a smile. )

You volunteered to be one of these 'Fists'?

I spend my nights trying to keep civilians, my team and myself from getting killed by the ghosts roaming around our streets. Been doing it since I was six. Bit of a kneejerk response when I hear of the dead not staying properly dead.

[ A quick explanation, and then back to Marc. ]

Then our nights are not dissimilar, although I've learned that what a person is doesn't dictate what they'll do. My most interesting, ( enunciated carefully, pointedly, ) days were before I died.

( still, it's COMPLICATED. marc tends to refer to himself — compulsively — as ghost, a spectre of the moon, but it's not true. marc lives and is human, arguably — feasibly, even — might not have even died in the first place, might only believe he did. )

Most ghosts, particularly the ones that are an active threat to the living, are remnants of emotion, rather than rational thought. Those remnants are angry, vengeful, and thus; murderous.

[ Eh. Lockwood's got a bit of blind spot on this subject. Lucy would be quick to argue that even the vengeful ghosts had a purpose beyond just being a killing machine. Lockwood is working on adopting more of Lucy's views. ]

All powerful beings tend to be dicks. But you volunteered to return?

Most. ( agreeably, because that's marc's experience too — at least, in the sense of encountering genuine ghosts versus the way that he perceives himself. that said, he — singularly, plurally — has tended to view the human facets of himself as emotional, has wanted to be only moon knight; a being of vengeance and justice and nothing else. ) It speaks more of their lived experience than anything else. If they're angry in death, they were angry in life, too.

Dying in the desert didn't really appeal. Khonshu offered me life. I agreed to the terms. The debt.
