ephes | arrival
When in Ephes... welcome to Arc VII, officially debuting on 15 September through an event log. Check out:
As the Merchant revealed, the party enters Ephes — opulent home to a formidable new army and dreams of empire. Undead lady Messalina had requested the citadel’s forces to liberate the unliving from the undead Brotherhood that enslaves them. In exchange, she offers any territories she frees.
The party’s chief objective is to survive until the temple that hosts the beacon of Ephes reopens, once the Senate leader is prepared to vote on Messalina’s proposal. In the interim, the party can optionally sway public and senatorial opinion either for or against Messalina.
Below is a loose summary of what to expect in the first log event of Friday, which will last til 3 October. You’ll get more descriptive and cosmetic details (that don’t require pre-planning) at the time.
POLITICS | non-politicians can support
Several characters are assigned as political advisors and can conspire to
Guidelines:
- ■ Characters can group up to meet these requirements, using the human and coin resources at their disposal. You can ask for support from anyone else in the party!
■ You should submit a completed thread of fulfilling some or all of thebribedpolitician’s needs by 23:59 GMT on 27 September to gain the politician’s vote.
Political crises only you can fix:
- ■ War veteran-turned-politician Sextus Longinus wants to leave his mark permanently on Ephes.
■ Senator Publia Secunda has been struck with court summons on charges of tax evasion. The court claims it has proof she has been passing the precious wares coming on her ships as geese.
■ Senator Ovidius Petronius’s wife fled home, ruining his image as a family man, after he was caught in compromising circumstances with another woman.
■ Severus Silvanus has been overcome by sickness and wishes to throw a final party worth remembering as he lives out his final year.
■ Once a formidable soldier, Senator Cassia Floriana has been for years denied an audience by the priests of the temple of the Chained God, who refuse to see her because of the blood on her hands.
■ Maximilianus Tacitus wishes to eliminate his reputation for stinginess — while spending not a single piece of his own coin.
A post with a ‘digital’ Senate meeting where politicians can make rhetorical arguments will go up by the end of the month.
GLADIATORS | non-gladiators may spectate or patron
Gladiators are received by arena leader Laetio and housed in single or shared cells. They are paired up and taught how to throw fights, exaggerate their reactions and come up with slogans and outrageous personas for the public’s enjoyment.
They notice some veteran gladiators are frequently inspected and measured by healers and their performances are often monitored by Laetio.
They experience their first day in the arena on the celebration of the Chained God’s first Chaining (OOCly around 18 September), honoured with games.
- ■ Characters can pair up to fight a demonic large beast, NPCs or each other. Decide the winner through RNG and don’t forget to pepper the interaction with over-the-top fake injuries and defeats.
■ Submit a finished fight thread by 23:59 GMT on 27 September for the winner/s to address the stadium and win support.
■ Under the guise of meeting champions, other party members can pay or coax the arena leadership to receive their ‘favourite’ gladiator(s) at their villas. Swap information or reunite with the party for a few hours of peace and quiet — but return to the arena by dawns.
White Night
One night (OOCly around 24 September), you wake up in a bleary haze to distant screams and heavy footsteps. In pitch dark, you glimpse the silhouettes of men wearing coarsely carved wooden masks, checking each cell. If you see their masks, you are overcome with a sudden, insurmountable terror to flee your (luckily, open) cell that won’t abate until you’re once more in living company. You know instinctively, those masked creatures are not human and they should not find you. Hide well.
The next day, a veteran gladiator, the Beast of Brenne, is no longer present for the morning call. Laetio insists he did not survive the previous day’s games and claims to know nothing of any late-night visitors.
THE HAND
Characters reach the barracks as part of a set of 100 new recruits. They are subjected to three days of intense training, ranging from running and parkour basics to weights and strength building, basic dagger combat and progressing in hard (magically induced) weather conditions. The recruit batch is overseen by Hand leader Narula and members depend on each other for food or care.
Honeyed
Recruits receive their assignments after the initial introduction and are posted in the barracks. Within days, you join a small team of recruits that must shadow a group of Hand veterans as they guard a Hive — an agricultural cluster outside of Ephes — against foul play during a grains transfer.
- ■ New recruits follow veteran soldiers into the eerily silent farmland dominated by high rows of wheat of corn. You feel watched and something touches your legs and thighs as you advance. Soldiers tell you: rabbits, snakes.
■ The transfer proceeds peacefully — until midday, when alarms blare, and a brawl starts near a watering well. It’s not merchants looking to steal, but a dozen of veteran Hand soldiers who went berserk and started killing indiscriminately.
■ Immobilise the attackers, or run to take civilians to safety in warehouses.
■ The berserk soldiers are removed. At the barracks, Narula addresses the incident, calling it the result of heatstroke.
MESSALINA’S INFILTRATORS
Assigned party members join Messalina’s group as paid aides of her cause. Stationed in the Senate’s summer villas outside of Ephes, the lady’s eclectic group comprises volatile magic users and necromancers, the undead and demonic creatures — all coexisting in tenuous peace. It’s every wo/man to themselves after dark.
Mid-summer
It becomes rapidly clear that Messalina does not trust the good will of Ephes and wants to cut a deal quickly by bribing, blackmailing, or interceding with Senate leader Caius.
She assigns party members to bolster the campaign of Maximus Faustus — a young, promising and popular politician with hopes of becoming Senate leader… who has been replaced by the demonic shapeshifter Alir.
- ■ Infiltrate noble functions and learn what would steer patricians towards Faustus’ cause.
■ The demon Alir is fiercely intelligent and capable of learning, but possesses little familiarity with human mores and lusts to consume human hearts — watch him while out in public. Handle or exterminate witnesses to Alir’s outbursts.
■ Patricians widely feel that Caius has been too sympathetic towards plebeians and neglectful of his own people. They want to see more grand gestures celebrating Ephes’ noblest class. See to it.
■ A derisive Alir suggests, if you want to know why the otherwise impatient Messalina is willing to wait out Caius’ ruminations, go to his private home on the night of the full moon (OOCly around 20 September). You may take along other party members.
■ The night of the full moon finds Caius’ closed-off villa well lit and bursting with song. Scale the walls and enter: it is empty of human life, but is instead hosting a banquet of the shadows of Caius’ ancestors. At first they ignore you, but then seem to increasingly recognise there is something wrong about you, and, daggers in hand, c Get as much information as you can until then!
CIVILIANS
Characters assigned civilian roles may assume their respective posts in Ephes, safe and sound — for a handful of days, before the citadel stirs for the religious celebrations of the Chained God’s twelve Chainings. The all-Father of the universe, the Chained God is by his nature prone to birthing, consuming and rebirthing the world and humanity with it, and was chained twelve times by humans to fetter his great destructive power.
- ■ The numerous priests of the Chained God wander the roads and mark the foreheads of civilians with sacred salted ash — which briefly brings out your foremost tendencies of anger, greed or selfishness.
■ Priests say you are merely bleeding out the frustration of the bound Chained God — and some of those ash-touched experience visions of a heavily fettered creature, struggling in agony in a cavernous room.
■ Those who ‘see’ the Chained God are brought and tested for holiness by Priestess Valeria, for it is known the Chained God chooses brief emissaries during the days of Chaining.
Off with his —
On the sixth day of Chaining (OOCly around 23 September), the great market of Ephes is awash with clamour, as the news shouter of the day receives a pouch containing the decapitated head of Tavernus, brother of Narula, who leads the army Ephes. The shocked newscaster stammers but drops the head and reads out the message that comes with it, Animals die for men to live. Men die for gods to prosper. — a saying attributed to the Chained God.
You can group up to investigate — and throw your hat in for a RNG pick to hang on to the head.
NIGHT OF KNIVES | EVERYONE INVITED
Ephes erupts alive on the twelfth day of Chaining (OOCly around 29 September) — the end of a yearly 12-day religious festival for the Chained God — with multiple roadside celebrations and private dinners.
Popular political upstart Maximus Faustus, backed by Messalina, holds his own night-long banquet, inviting representatives of the political tribes, the Hand, Messalina’s people, civilians — and gladiators to entertain them. All characters may attend.
The affair sprawls over multiple floors of Faustus’ enormous villa, with entertainment ranging from poetry, theatre, artistic and magical recitals on the lower floors to a gladiator performance and heavy opioids upstairs.
- ■ No better time to publicise your feats or generosity. Why not have your character (including gladiators) perform or bring an offering?
■ You can sign up for a RNG draw for a conversation with Faustus by 23:59 GMT on 18 September.
■ Towards the middle of the night, head priestess Valeria, who attends, asks to conduct a religious rite not unlike a séance, whereby one person may channel the Chained God and speak on the future of Ephes. Sign up if you’re interested in possession.
■ After 2 a.m., torch lights dim down, as some twenty masked pantomimes enter the main banquet halls, shushing the rooms silent. They lightly mock some of the high-profile Senators in attendance with gentle jokes and miming —
■ …before slashing their throats or stabbing them, sparking a chaotic stampede as banquet attendants attempt to exit the villa. They find the main hall doors closed from the outside, while fire seems to have broken out inside.
■ Try to rescue some of the Senators, and help the crowds and yourself escape from Faustus’ burning villa. Unhelpfully, the assassins fluctuate between being men of flesh and merging with shadows.
■ Come morning, a list is found on the main hall floor of Faustus’ villa with an assassination contract that declares forfeit the lives of the killed Senators (and of those you saved). All had intended to support Messalina.

Details pending who I rope in, but theoretically: would it be possible to 'help' Maximilianus Tacitus with this sad issue of appearing stingy by having him support a fundraiser? One that may or may not also end up pressuring him into donating too at the last minute? You know, so he isn't out shone by the generosity of others.
Cute, sad children will be staged for maximum effect.
Think of the orphans!

CHARACTER | CANON: Wrathion | Warcraft
THEIR ROLE IN EPHES: Patroned by Procula Avita, representing widows, orphans and war veterans. We going to pose with so many hot, sad widows and cute orphans.
EVENT PLANS:
Making Maximilianus Tacitus donate money is Main Cause.
I want to encourage him to support a fundraiser: where he's just the face of it, etc, to appeal to his stingy nature! Then trap him into donating last minute to compete with rivals. We will use sad orphan children as emotional weapons. I'm thinking we can maybe leverage the veteran Sextus Longinus into this too, to help him leave his mark. Perhaps donations are for a new orphanage? Or renovating an orphanage? Children orphaned by war?
Also thinking of finding the hottest widows to go the seduction/entrapment angle. Either they donate to win sexy widow favour, or they are forced to donate later to make evidence of indiscretions vanish!
Accepting other ideas too!
Also happy to help gladiators with themes and costumes.
And any other shenanigans where Wrathion can support! We're always down for shenanigans.
CAN GENERALLY HELP WITH:
Politics, access via his position, outfits, PR campaigns, blackmail, sneaky shenanigans, digging up stuff on any widows/orphans/veterans, digging up stuff on other political rivals, I'm channelling The Thick of It energy via fantasy bullshit!

CHARACTER | CANON: Jacob Frye
THEIR ROLE IN EPHES: Jacob is a civilian for literally the first time in his life! He was planning to kick back and enjoy it, but he's not really got the money to do that, so he's hiring himself out as a body guard for those who need protection. He's very good at hitting people, but not in a gladiatorial way. More of a making your enemies disappear sort of way.
EVENT PLANS: Going to babysit some rich fancy folk and listen in on their conversations? Maybe earn some money on the side by hitting people who need to be hit in alleyways. Also by escorting gladiators on their evenings out.
Unofficially hes going to be up on a lot of rooftops again, because he's missed being in a city. Maybe the HAND and he will have a run in or two?
CAN GENERALLY HELP WITH: ...drinking any alcohol you happen to have with you, watching gladiator games, etc if you want something more casual.

THEIR ROLE IN EPHES: she's a spy and investigator, specifically looking for information on a few senators, and also spreading the word about peace between the living and the dead (easy, she lived with that).
EVENT PLANS: She's here for gossip and chatter (which she will find generally annoying but she's got to find some information) and showing up to parties. She'll accompany people anywhere, or help them get into parties.
She can help with Caius and his celebration with the ancestors. Fun times, talking to the ancestors, and then fleeing for your life.
For Maximus Faustus' banquet: unlikely to hunt the assassins but she can help with injuries, if needed.
She'll probably visit the arena at least once.
CAN GENERALLY HELP WITH: Getting into some of the nicer parties, healing, and dealing with the undead.

CHARACTER | CANON: Daenerys Targaryen | A Song of Ice and Fire
THEIR ROLE IN EPHES: Patroned by Iulius Lepidus and represents sailors, fishermen and transport workers. She'll be hanging out at the docks a lot.
EVENT PLANS: She'll be helping Senator Cassia Floriana receive an audience from the Temple priests. She's sympathetic with someone who is viewed as bloody for having to wage war.
She's been given a large allowance, so she'll be spending it to help upgrade the ships and help the more unfortunate people of the city. Maybe also try and pick up on any rumors and get an idea where people are leaning in regard to the vote.
Dany is free to help with anything. She'd be willing to tend to the wounds of the gladiators or help any civilians with their tasks.
CAN GENERALLY HELP WITH: Politics, infiltration, persuasion, charity, etc. She's not much of a soldier, but she's learning how to fight.

CHARACTER | CANON: Number Five Hargreeves | The Umbrella Academy
THEIR ROLE IN EPHES: Interrogator and strategist, looking to identify the biggest weaknesses and best strategies to implement when progressing Messalina's campaign.
EVENT PLANS:
- After 2+ years Five got a mirror shared out of him (thanks friends), so after a brief recovery prior to arriving, he's firing on all cylinders when he gets to Ephes. Expect him to be a lot more active this arc!
- He is going to be so sour when he learns that they want him to send assassination assignments to people he does not trust, the audacity. (He's been assigned an artist, an animal right's activist, and a fish-cult recruiter, but this one cuts at his ego.) Please come listen to him vent while dancing around why he's so insulted, it'll be very funny.
- Once he's over that, he will be motivated to actually put the work into this role and decide which long game he wants to play out in this scenario. Outwardly he'll be setting Messalina up for success either way and generally using everyone in their group to fit whatever strategy he decides on. He's a wild card that you should absolutely listen to.
- KEEPING AN EYE on the gladiators, especially for those he cares about, with zero nerves. Don't make him bail you out but he will if he has to. (And generally, there's like a handful of you he will do his best to stalk as best he can when he's not out in the creepy undead villas.)
- Possibly get a hellhound as a pet?? Boy needs a dog-friend.
- I failed to have a drunken log moment in the last event, so I might have this happen here at some inopportune time. He works hard. :(
- Other things! Determined to do more this go around, so please come at me with any ideas and I'll make it happen.
CAN GENERALLY HELP WITH:
- The usual: he can teleport so he's handy for breaking and entering, getting into/out of situations, infiltrating and other synonyms.
- Big Strategy ideas with a dose of insanity math.
- Not sure what your character should be doing? Come ask and Five will be too happy to inform you of exactly how to best play into whatever he's working on.
- He was recently gifted a whistle that draws most threats towards him, and he does not know this is what it does. Here for the right opportunity to find out!
- Perks of the assignment: 'Nominally welcome at any party, marketplace and conversation of Ephes, but not its official Senate meetings. Formally acknowledged as the man looking to investigate the odds of profit for Messalina's ventures in Ephes, so often welcome and facilitated conversations with locals.'

THEIR ROLE IN EPHES: Patroned by Vipsania Marcella, representing healers, teachers and herbalists (with a side in poisoning). He'll have access to medical records as well as the knowledge of said healers and teachers, invaluable in the right circumstances.
EVENT PLANS:
- Definitely looking into Severus Silvanus and swaying his vote by helping ease his pain in the twilight of his life. And if he really does insist on that party, maybe someone could assist in that matter.
- Up for meeting with other representatives to plan and determine the best course of action to secure votes, general politicking and such. He's a king back home, he's used to this sort of thing.
- He will have Concerns for the gladiators (particularly given what his father went through in the gladiator pits, he knows how it changes a person), and will do what he can to offer them aid. Even if it's just patching them up. Potentially more?
- Trying his best to keep people alive during the stabbings on the Night of Knives. He's a pretty powerful healer, so who knows? Might be able to pull off a few miracles. Help him get folks (and himself) to safety!
CAN GENERALLY HELP WITH: Healing magic, navigating politics, diplomacy, possibly being convinced into some unlawful behavior for a good enough cause?

CHARACTER | CANON: Stephen Strange / MCU
THEIR ROLE IN EPHES: Political advisor to Titus Sulpicius, representing magicians and magical buskers, who also happens to be disdainful of magicians and magical buskers. He hates him so much.
EVENT PLANS:
- Helping to really make Severus Silvanus's party the standout event of the year. Stephen's got free rein and the enthusiastic talents of all of Ephes' wizards and magical performers at his disposal, so he can provide some killer entertainment & fancy magical waitstaff etc.
What he unfortunately can't provide is much of anything else, because his patron only gives him 1,500 gold pieces to work with a month, so he'll be looking to team up with anyone with money or other relevant resources to put together a killer (not literally, that's for the Night of Knives) passing-on party.
- Party planning aside he's very happy to collaborate with fellow advisors on any of the other senators' needs. You have ideas that need magic? You've got magic. With all of Ephes' magic-users willing to aid their patron, there's a wide variety of options here.
Couple of possibilities off the top of my head: spells cast on someone or a series of someones to take on the appearance of Ovidius Petronius' wife for public appearances until such times as somebody can convince her to come back/in perpetuity if that can't be managed; help to fabricate conflicting evidence in Publia Secunda's court case/help to tamper with the existing evidence.
- Battling assassins and saving senators as best he can on the Night of Knives.

So far the plans are have her take advantage of her freedom and see what she can do to help anyone.
And she will still have to produce maps to pretend she's fulfilling her role, so if anyone wants to help her with that to be more convincing / keep her status, please by all means.

EVENT PLANS:
• Supplying medical attention to the soldiers of the Hand
• Trying to keep the soldiers from murdering each other.
• Keeping an eye on the recruits knowing it's not heat sickness.
• Possibly checking in on the gladiator games
• Attending the banquet
CAN GENERALLY HELP WITH:
• Fighting
• Medical if needed
• Doing his best to stop fights
• Making food for those who need it.
Kahl-175 |⍓| Warframe
CONTACT: disco
CHARACTER | CANON: Kahl-175 | Warframe
THEIR ROLE IN EPHES: Civilian! He's going to be a porter.
EVENT PLANS: Kahl will be using his strength to make himself basically invisible: nobody looks twice at a guy hauling freight. He'll also be delivering especially heavy boxes and amphorae to important villas and key locations, offering to carry them in to storage for the servants. He'll be making friends and mapping floorplans along the way. He'll also be stealing stuff to be given away in "generosity" at the festival event. How does a porter end up with so much shiny stuff? Dividends on good investments. Definitely.
Kahl will be magically and actually pissed off at the ash thing from the priests, because seeing a vision like that is way, waaaay too similar to a mind control thing he experienced in canon. Spicy backstory and possible priest-punching abound!
Once the murders happen at the festival, Kahl can help out in two ways: He can fight, obviously. But he's also a living battering ram. Let him get a run-up and he may be able to bash a door down, no tools required.
CAN GENERALLY HELP WITH: Getting people into villas or warehouses (hope you like being in a crate for a while!), scouting out the same, making connections with lower-class people who are in a position to overhear things, delivering contraband wherever it might be needed, and anything you might need a big cyborg guy with a messed up face, a kind soul, and a lifetime of hitting things very, very hard.

CHARACTER | CANON: Benedict Fox | The Last Case of Benedict Fox
THEIR ROLE IN EPHES: Gladiator! I got a good kick out of his background story, ngl. It's perfect in a way that is going to make Benedict roll his eyes constantly. I love it.
EVENT PLANS:
Gladiator--I'd like to do some team up battles if any of the other gladiators are up for it! I'm thinking he was an enslaved captive from a conquered land, hence a gentle priest good in combat
I say as if he doesn't come from a background of religious fanatics that are, in fact, all about beating the shit out of wayward souls. And for additional flavor I think he'll try to keep his special abilities hidden a little while longer but eventually have to forfeit that secret in a gladiatorial battle against some fearsome beast. Who wants to see a tentacle shield for the first time and question him about it? :'DI might also like to play with the idea that people come ask him after the afterlife. Because it would be amusing how he reacts to that. (Or scary if he just goes ham and starts describing Limbo instead of some unknown heaven nonsense. Maybe if he doesn't like someone...lol.)
White Night: I'd like to do something with this prompt, heck yeah! Benedict is familiar with this sort of supernatural presence. He could be a calm presence even as they all run from fear away from these frightful entities. Also, I wonder if he could investigate the murder of the Beast of Brenne and prove it was the uninvited night guests that did it...
Politics--He could be convinced to help provide coin to aid something/one if anyone wants to try to talk him into it. He...he gets coin from his temple fans apparently. More importantly (and surprisingly) I think I could see him helping out Senator Cassia Floriana if someone can get him an audience with the temple priests. His background story of being a priest of an ancient, lost religion seems to have him in good favor with the temple guilds and he might be willing to support her for Reasons. He would have some words to say from experience about the whole bloody hands and religion anyway. Anyone interested in that one?
Night of Knives--Maybe something showy for his gladiator persona, something lighthearted before the real plot begins! And then when the shit hits the fan: he will definitely help people out of the burning villa and try to protect people from the murderers. Because that's what he do. This sounds exciting! Maybe he can do more investigating once the dust settles... if he can stay out of the gladiatorial arena after that night. Probably more on that after the next bit drops I assume. idk how this works yet tbh first event here aww yeeeeh.
CAN GENERALLY HELP WITH: detective work, combat, silly gladiatorial persona shenanigans...

CHARACTER | CANON: Wen Kexing / Word of Honor
THEIR ROLE IN EPHES: Patroned by Servius Flaccus, representing wine and opium sellers and pleasure houses, nothing new here.
EVENT PLANS: BLACKMAIL. So very excited. Wen Kexing is going to put some pressure on Senator Ovidius Petronius, because he's already involved in some kind of extra-marital scandal so it makes the most sense. I'd like for him to enlist someone as a kind of messenger, maybe they meet up in the pleasure house and get to talking about how a person can encourage votes and Wen Kexing is like HEY I KNOW
we stab themWE ASK THEM VERY NICELY WITH EVIDENCE WE MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE FORGED OURSELVES.CAN GENERALLY HELP WITH: PARTY PLANNING. Do you need a bunch of scantily clad people who can serve wine and grapes and play instruments? Do you want wine? Drugs?
Also I'm going to have him in the PLEASURE HOUSE a lot so he's also around to hide out people who may or may not need hiding, so if you want to be really funny with me and hide your character in a scantily clad outfit and pretend they're a whore, let's do it.
And then later at the NIGHT OF KNIVES I think he's going to be super angry at the assassins and try to like, track them down so if your character needs help from one of the most deadliest men in the Jianghu ( who has up until now been pretending he is otherwise ) then let's go, let's slit some throats.
