CHARACTER(S) & CANON(S): Jon Snow, Game of Thrones (tv edition), northerndragon WHO THEY ARE, THE ONE-LINE ELEVATOR PITCH: Medieval hero-king chosen-one, with a great psychological emphasis on how much that would actually suck. Jon is a stressed out, sad, usually kindly person who is preparing his home for a series of wars that he doesn’t think he can win. WHAT ARE THEY UP TO NOWADAYS? PLOTS THEY NEED HELP WITH? Jon is so brand new that I still owe some of you replies on his OOC intro (and, of course, the IC one!). He has no team assignment and came into town as an envoy of the Merchant, for whom he made an important delivery. Along with meeting new people, he is currently trying to figure out what’s going on with his sister Sansa, and also trying to convince Daenerys that the future of humanity depends on her helping him back home. There’s a pretty good chance of him being willing to help with something if he thinks the goal is worthy and if he’s able to.
ICE BREAKER ROUNDS: i. Black Friday sales hit and the last item on your character's shopping list is getting swarmed by the masses. How do they secure the goods?
If it’s canon, by the power of deus ex machina and plot armor (someone probably gives it to him because he’s Ned Stark’s Son).
If it’s me writing it… he’s a brick wall working his way gently through the crowd, and then maybe not so gently. He’ll break up fights and be mildly exasperated, but if someone hits him, he gets surprisingly feral fast.
The real answer is that he’s no longer the kind of person you send into a situation where he would have to put himself first over something petty.
ii. Your character has been stranded on a long journey with a wailing baby whose lung capacity predicts a great future in the musical arts. Everyone is staring. How do they assert dominance?
Jon just looks miserable. Occasionally he gives whoever is caring for the baby a weak smile that’s meant to be reassuring, but doesn’t reach his eyes and is maybe also a little regretful. It’s not their fault the baby is crying, babes do cry, he remembers how all of his younger siblings used to weep and wail… only, the journey has been hard, and he wishes there was even a moment of peace to be found.
He genuinely tries to be patient, though. You don’t assert dominance over a baby for doing baby things!
iii. What hipster coffee order would your character put in, if they even knew what coffe is?
Do I go with the obvious “it’s good quality but he takes it black” (Jon is largely pretty minimalist but did grow up in a rich family, and there’s a Night’s Watch joke here) or do I go with what we know about his tastes, which suggests he might actually like something sweeter?
If not a plain black coffee, he’d probably like the cold brew with cascara cold foam.
THREE TYPES OF CR YOUR WANT FOR YOUR CHARACTER (BE SPECIFIC): 1. Comrades in arms 2. Surrogate siblings 3. The adults in the room WHAT CAN YOUR CHARACTER UNIQUELY AND PG-13-INGLY OFFER? I don’t know about unique, but Jon has a lot of integrity and a cool sword. He also has a weird key that might become relevant later.
I get the sense Lan Wangji and Jon will do well, because they're both so pained by political subterfuge. Just give them the cold, the woods and... something to kill, I reckon.
That’s absolutely it. I have to admit that I don’t know too much about LWJ other than that he’s close to WWX in canon and has a lot of rabbits. (Time to read up again!)
But there’s definitely something in “the outdoors are therapeutic” for people who wouldn’t have that language to express the sentiment, and also nice to have people around who just Get It and are pretty easy to be around because both people vibe on the same wavelength in certain ways. /chinhands
lmf I'd describe Lan Wangji as a holier-than-thou nuclear bomb. He has the cold demeanour of Stannis/Tywin, the honour streak of Ned and the bizarre, hypocritical, bloodthirsting exceptions of... everyone in ASoIaF.
Mostly, he abhors insincerity and disrespect to the living/dead and INJUSTICE!!!! Hence why I think they'll either rankle each other or get on quite smoothly — toss-up, really, I can see it going either way.
But won't lie, Wei Wuxian is the one people gravitate to, Wangji just. Mooches his CR.
yesssss. I think they can probably work around to this in their current conversation, since she saw his network exchange with Dany.
The good news is that the books do also use the term “white walkers” — just in passing, more as a description than the most common name. I guess the show bypassed “Others” both because of its use on LOST around the time GoT was in heavy development, and its capacity to confuse viewers.
What’s more confusing to me is how to approach the Night King, because not only is the Night’s King in the books a different figure, I think that figure may also exist in the “history and lore” videos for the show (they make like 98% of background bookverse stuff show canon)… but I need to check. The show never explains its use of the term “Night King”… it shows up sometime around “The Door” in S6 and I have no idea where Jon got it, but he starts using it independently, and the showverse NK definitely is not a past Lord Commander. So I think we might trip over that a little, but we’ll figure it out.
Sansa knows that Jon isn’t in the Night’s Watch anymore, but being in this setting might make it easier for her to wrap her head around his poorly-explained miracle resurrection. I’m sure it’ll probably come up soon!
I'd also guess that 'Others' was just too generic a term for D&D's liking, since it's not as noticeable when there isn't text to capitalize it and have it stand out.
Sansa really wouldn't know anything about the night's king, I don't believe, so I don't think she'd be in any position to dispute what information he shares. It probably won't be too obvious they're from different timelines from that alone.
I actually couldn't remember if Sansa had heard any updates on Jon at all beyond him being Lord Commander, despite re-reading through her sections quite recently. There's a lot to digest though, and my memory is absolutely a pit so I totally can see me forgetting. Where does it say that she knows about his fate, do you remember? I need to quickly review again so I don't mess up any questions she has.
She might be able to put two and two together from his network conversations so far (especially with Dany, if she stalked that) that he’s not in the Night’s Watch anymore, which shouldn’t be possible because of the lifetime commitment. If she doesn’t put it together from that, it should still eventually be implicit in this current conversation (maybe not quite yet, though) - because he absolutely couldn’t be LC and king of anything at the same time, because it’s a violation of the vows. (Everyone knows the vows, but not everyone takes them seriously.) So it’d be reasonable for her to have Questions. News of Jon’s untimely-yet-temporary demise definitely hasn’t spread in the books themselves yet. (And it’s true… this canon is A Lot. I think you’re doing well, though!)
That thing about “Others” being a generic term is exactly what I meant about its capacity to confuse viewers. GMTA!
Anyway, he’s duty-bound to Big Bro at her, but she can set the parameters of the bro-ing: when they reunite, it’s pretty clear he’s more interested in supporting her than controlling her. But he does have her back for sure. I’m interested to see where this goes, because they can be a formidable team when their goals align and they’re communicating well.
It's true that given how much he covered in what little he spoke of with Dany in public, she could piece it together, but I'm going to play it in that her immediate assumption that he was just stating a baldface lie in order to gain some kind of upper-hand in a strange land (who wouldn't want to be king instead of being leashed to the night's watch?). It's such a grand statement that it wouldn't even occur to her that it could be true; the progression just wouldn't make sense from her POV. She's just too happy to see him to be mad about him lying like that...for now. He'll start getting hounded with questions once she's done making it all about herself (she's too good at that still).
Also I am 3000% in for them becoming close siblings finally, although it will be so difficult even for him to get close to her. He definitely has a head start on everyone else, though! I agree that with their powers combined, they are nigh unstoppable.
(The stuff he’s saying to Dany… honestly, it’s so impossible that it makes sense to go with something like “I guess he just has to lie too sometimes,” and more interesting for the truth to come out gradually.)
Pretty much! She's surprised Jon got so good at lying, but who knew what the Night's Watch taught him! He goes too large, though, gotta make the lies more lowkey, bro. Father is rolling in his grave.
But honestly, everything that's happened to him will make her soul leave her body more than once when she learns of it. Dying and resurrection? When did you become a magic man, Jon Snow? Where are her magic powers gdi?
Comrades in arms! Slick's also met Dany already, so he'll recognize that Jon speaks one of the languages she does. He's also used to being stuck in a war that'll end badly for him no matter who wins, and he doesn't have any legally recognized parents. They've got so much in common!
Also Slick's been missing his brothers and trying not to think about what a jerk he was to them the last time he saw them, so he's a potential surrogate sibling too. He's used to being the big brother, but he's also... really young. Like, physically and neurologically 21, but chronologically he's 10½. So he's running on half the experience and zero childhood.
So that's a. That's a whole thing right there, if you want to poke at it.

If anyone who actually came out to help monster fight wants an action thread or log for the post-fight meet and greet, I can get that rolling.

An action thread sounds like a delightful start :>
