ARC VI: THE SUNKEN

Happy Friday! Curtains are drawing on the Dream a little dream of her... travel arc, with the conclusion one cut away — warning for spoilers, if you're still threading out the mystery

IT WAS ALL A DREAM

As the team has been piecing together, there is something amiss with good Firo, and the numerous suggestions in answer to his ransom offer push M. le Bagade to accuse the renown heroine that she might be... a living dream. The Conductor threatens her expulsion, to the anguish of her sister Lita, who takes full responsibility. Firo, she says, was unaware — Lita, also a living dream, has been secretly feeding her stolen sedative herbs to induce sleep and make Firo think herself a 'normal' person.

Seeing her spouse mired in conflict, Prassenze emerges from where she has been changing appearance in the passenger crowd. A blank slate more than a person, she confesses she is also living dream, forged as a companion to Firo. As the party suspected, she has been using a dream thief to recreate herself on each wedding day and better suit beloved Firo and her companions. Sadly, Prassenze and the dream thief ran out of dream tokens to power their efforts, and Prassenze chose to hide away. Hugo — Natasha has learned, of the Merchant's homeland Ellethia — bashfully admits he is the dream thief, who created the perfect hero (Firo), her stalwart sister (Lita) and the blushing bride (Prassenze).

While the Conductor should remove living dreams from the train, Hugo patiently reminds him of the many years when he and his team allowed dream thieves to continue their work undeterred on the Sandman, for a price. To protect the train's reputation, the Conductor calls the incident closed. The group retires to their compartments — Firo and Prassenze agreeing to talk, Lita a little shattered, and Hugo... telling the Merchant's party that, if he had known what trouble they would cause, he would not have procured their tickets.

Betting results: 40,000 coins to Wei Wuxian and Dean each, 20,000 to Beitang Moran and Lan Sizhui each, 30,000 to Five.

ARC VI

We officially enter Arc VI on 15 May, when the group arrives in sunken village Yancai during a first log event — which doubles as a test drive meme.

■ Courtesy of the Merchant, characters are assigned false identities/occupations and dwellings while in Yancai. Unrelated to the Merchant, they might be haunted. CTRL+F your character's name to learn their fate. The haunting & atonement are entirely optional — feel free to ignore or tweak.

■ A new NPC inbox will follow shortly.

■ Characters are coming into Arc VI with varying levels of false memories of being native to Yancai. These false memories are temporary and will dispel within days of arrival. During this period, characters can still sense they have a connection with their CR (as deeply or shallowly as you want), even if they have a diffuse sense of how it was formed. Ex: character A might know they love B, even if they don't recall B is their spouse of 50 years. They would (and should) be startled by this discrepancy in their memories.

■ the first Arc VI log will cover: a few days of acclimating to the village (and fully recovering character memories, where applicable), getting optionally haunted, exploring the lakes and and searching sunken territories for clues about the time-warping decay.

Adrienne is going to cope very well with being here... until she gets haunted and she will end up being a snappy nightmare. More details below!

MEMORY STATUS: What are memories? Adrienne's coming here thinking this is her life until that's all ripped away from her, probably the same time she gets haunted.

MEMORY STATUS: She will think she's been a person living in Yancai for some time now, at first. Her memories will return after a few days. She will still recognize her current CR as part of her life, but find holes instead of answers to HOW she knows them. Unless you want to weave current CR in with me? Which I'm down for.

Why not move on from being a legal pioneer, diplomat and master orator, (whose impassioned five-minute improvised speech once convinced 4,000 men to turn their swords against their wretched commander), investor and guard who helped kill their master in true kingsguard style to... matchmaker? He will conduct this in the serious, business transaction style. Bring him your full family tree! Tell him your income!

He's keeping the bribes, but they will not sway him. He will be ruthless, and extremely critical.

MEMORY STATUS: Memories unchanged, but they have a deep sense of rightness about staying in the village!

He's going to be haunted by a ghost pretending to be Anduin so that's fine. Expect him to be trying to avoid being where the haunting might happen, trying to aggressively sedate himself to avoid it, and probably being exhausted by it all.

Will share the bounty of his bribes as a matchmaker! Will absolutely not talk about his Feelings in any way, shape or form. May resort to using his dragon catnip to try and zone out and chill out from all the stress.

Oh, and is probably a little curious-slash-paranoid about the Beastmaster's creatures in the wood. If anyone wants to warily investigate that and/or the witches/curse!#

ETA: Also how could I forget, his house is full of fucking toads at night. He will complain. This is a no-sleep combo, haunting and noisy toads.

WHO IS YOUR CHARACTER IN YANCAI? Bird Dispeller, she and Drogon keep the birds away from the fish, and the Drogon away from the fish. She's living in the Mayor's house with Jon Snow, River Song, Ren Amamiya, and Kahl. She'll be haunted by a milk-toothed child and probably calling him "Rhaego" whenever she sees him, chasing after him at night. She'll promise she's not crazy.

MEMORY STATUS: Dany knows who she is, but thinks she made a decision long ago to settle in the village. She'll start to remember things quick, she's got too many people waiting for her to stay in this false illusion. Thanks House of the Undying.

WHO IS YOUR CHARACTER IN YANCAI? Dean is a noted brewer of the world's tiniest bar, the Teeth Breaker. Roughly three people can sit in this glorified wardrobe. The alcohol is vilely strong and self-replenishing.

Residing with: Kamala Khan, Natasha Romanoff, Red, Nynaeve

He's also living as one of the former crime lord's successors so huffy buff men come at night and basically fold his underwear and do his laundry and it's just kind of a thing. Dean will experience very confusing feelings.

One of Dean's dreams is to run a bar and he's doing just that. He's not big on boats (or planes), but he is where he is so he makes do.

His haunting is a witch he's never seen in person, but only heard about so he's going to think he's the only one with a stranger haunting him. Just. His. Luck.

MEMORY STATUS: 2. Dean will be confused for the first few days, thinking he arrived with everyone, but ages ago. And why wouldn't he stay here. He's "dead" after all and finally has a bar to call his own. It's not home, but it's as good as for the time being.

GENERAL PLANS: I really would love some established CR for those that are either 1. or 2. Patrons of his bar. Guy friends. Flirtationships. He would even be open to a fling (that's not really a fling, thanks false memories.) He'll spend his off time fishing.

It may also be a good time for someone to really learn what he went through before ending up here. It's been long enough in his "mind" that he might emotionally open up.

Also, he's gained a mafioso valet at his stead. So, please to be recognizing he's important. Apparently. Not that he'd ever believe it past someone's obsession.

- hanging out on the pirate ship where he lives with pirates, magically making a whole bunch of rope.

MEMORY STATUS: 2 - She's aware she came from somewhere else, but she thinks she's been here a good long while and you know, built a life for herself again. Just like S2. And the husband she's being haunted by. This is fine.

GENERAL PLANS: Not so much a plan but more of an FYI, I am leaving on Sunday for a weeklong trip where I will not be bringing my laptop so I will be late to this log! So no top level for this one, but I will tag into things on my return. Feel free to assume that Allison is pirating around being a very fashionable pirate and talking to her ghost husband, this is fine.

Once the memory juju wears off though, I'm excited to dig into the curses and the time travel shenanigans once we get there, I just don't have specific ideas at this time (blame vacation brain).

MEMORY STATUS: will be thinking she’s a full native.

GENERAL PLANS: i swear i have one brain cell and it is convinced that natasha killed her husband to try and take over his crime empire and was thwarted by all of these successors popping out of the woodwork BUT i digress —

- honestly, would love some things about her running from milk-toothed babes (up to you if you want your character to see them or not, but i say so for fun?) and then slowly losing her sanity over what follows (why does it seem familiar? why does it feel like she’s been somewhere other than yancai?)

- fraught/uncomfortable/awkward meets with CR who remember that they’re not natives and wants to know what the heck happened to her

- building fake new CR based on the new premise; maybe you were at her wedding to her dearly departed husband (funny how she can’t remember his face), she shopped at your market stall for years, was at your baby’s ceremonial drown-christening, etc etc.

- chaos once her memories come back and she remembers relationships forged with other ‘natives’ that are not actually … real. one of her fears is losing herself (a la red room) and so the idea that she fully did not know herself tapdances directly on that primal terror. also, re-remembering her death, yikes!

Lives in a beautiful house that once belonged to a mayor and has unreliable floors, with Daenerys, Kahl, Ren, and River. Why has his son joined a fish cult?

MEMORY STATUS: He thinks he's lived here for a long time for some good reason, but that should begin to clear up.

GENERAL PLANS: THINGS. STUFF. Will probably pursue whatever opportune plot angles! The fact that he can be out at night may or may not be helpful -- we'll see. He will definitely not be weirded out by the names "Yuncai" and "White Harbours" (these are both very close to place names from his canon!)

I am sometimes super bad at responding to hits on these things, so: if you hit Jon now, I'm interested. If you ever hit him in the past, I'm interested! Basically I'm game for the majority of things that may plausibly come up. Hijinks and shenanigans are go!

WHO IS YOUR CHARACTER IN YANCAI? A door-to-door recruiter of worshippers for fish god Kathoo'lul. On the one hand, hilarious. A great excuse to harass people for some gains. There is also a zero percent chance he knows how to pitch a fish god. It's so stupid. Also rooming with the Doctor, Wanda Maximoff, and Chu Wanning in a haunted lighthouse, so enjoy that.

MEMORY STATUS: Memories unchanged, but they have a deep sense of rightness about staying in the village. Here to be the straight man to your made-up life.

GENERAL PLANS:
- Taking a grudging try at this role so he can spy door-to-door and get them to talk. It will probably go badly immediately.
- He got some $$ from being semi-right about the train business! So he might just drop in unannounced and repay whoever gave him money recently. Absolutely not using it as an excuse to see how screwed up their memories are.
- Five is 100% absolutely going to be extremely suspicious of any time-manipulation going on, so expect him to be paranoid and dig in if he starts suspecting. He is the authority on time travel so it's his obligation.
- His haunting involves seeing his made-up mannequin wife that he lived alone with in the apocalypse for 40+ years, tapping morse code messages at him and generally making him crazy. Expect to see him tapping back, trying to find her when she disappears, etc. (Also free to actually see the mannequin, he's convinced so many that she was a real person. Because she is real... sort of.) He will not want her to go away, but he did just go through this with a demon posing as his brother in Hell so the struggle is real.
- Probably going to be setting up to deal with his mirror-curse early on if he can help it. HE PROMISED HIMSELF. If all goes well almost no one will know.
- Anything! These are just stream of consciousness plans, I'm very here for all of it.

The big, big caveat is I'm going to be largely not here for the rest of May, and very start of June will be rocky. This is establishing some of what my characters will be up to, but the one I'm actively threading right now is Wei Wuxian, with my other two on hiatus. WHO IS YOUR CHARACTER IN YANCAI? He's a Minstrel, and this is unfortunately something he's going to be Very Enthused about at first, and then Very Amused by later while definitely hamming it up. He's going to be annoyingly fast to pick up new instruments, but will primarily stick to his flute.

MEMORY STATUS: He believes he's from the village to start, sensing his connections to all CR, if not necessarily having it make sense to that CR. You're all part of his village! Or... wait... are you? Is he?

GENERAL PLANS: Once his memories are back, his haunting is one he'll deal with, though his first instinct is going to be you know. Actually dispelling it or trying to break whatever the tie is, because he's going to be Curious that this is happening. The details of it are ones he's going to be sad about, but he knows the names and why they're there and his culpability or his lack of sole culpability in the deaths he's caused. If his cavemates or any CR wants to come calling at night when he's dealing with those beads and their names, hit me up!

He's a good swimmer, so he's also on hand to help with swimming tasks or saving people from water or generally retrieving things (nods to Wangji, here to help you out bae if you want), and he's going to be Very Interested in resolving this time oddness and whatever's cursing this town, because it's always a curse. It just is. And what do you mean the beasts of the Beastmaster might be in the woods? He remembers what a number of those were like from Taravast, that's Not Great News! Anyway we're hunting down any that take out villagers right? Right. Good talk.

WHO IS YOUR CHARACTER IN YANCAI? I had to double check that I recalled what a caber was but yes, it's a ... it's a pole. He's going to find this hilarious and easier than it should be because of what he is (werewolf, essentially), and he is the best caber tosser you've ever met! He will live this up. His pole is now the largest. Remark upon it.

MEMORY STATUS: I think I had him recall from start who he is, or be befuddled a bit, but honestly it's easy enough for him to integrate recalling he's brand new here and disliking the feel of magic all over. Why is everything so steeped in this searing nonsense?

GENERAL PLANS: He's supposed to help rescue someone to break his haunting, and I'd like to do that, but also: I want at least one person to find him when he's leashed and being dragged by the Lumberjack, up to the point where the Lumberjack disappears.

He's absolutely flirting with the patrons who come looking for the missing brothel ladies/gents/whomevers, though pointedly kicking them all back out again because he is not sleeping with people who expect it to be a financial exchange #gofigure, so feel free to call on him (you can literally! shout!) if you want help kicking someone back out, fellow people of the house.

Nynaeve al'Meara | The Wheel of Time (Amazon):

WHO IS YOUR CHARACTER IN YANCAI? Mermaid researcher. This means she doesn't have to deal with idiots unless she wants to (she never wants to, but she will work healing as a matter of a driving need to do so), and she can swim.

MEMORY STATUS: Again I forget if she remembers or only remembers at night, but either way she'll be mostly familiar and very aware of who she is and what's going on at night regardless. Also giving you all the "..." looks for thinking you're from here full stop, those who are.

GENERAL PLANS: After the first round of former hooligans coming over to clean, she will absolutely have no fear bossing them around; anyone also living with her please be amused by this. Nynaeve is focussed on figuring out what's causing all this nonsense, since that seems likely to lead back to getting to the beacon and gateway and thus home. She'll play hide and seek with her haunts a few times before she'll be helping with the villagers needing healing assistance (not the drunkards, they can suffer) and resolving things that way, so if you want to help her search the first night or two lmk! Then we can handwave it.

WHO IS YOUR CHARACTER IN YANCAI? A perfume seller for fishermen... which he is going to be quite annoyed about because people are going to be hounding him when all he wants is piece and quiet, plus, he isn't a merchant, his husband is. Between that and the crabs (don't ask), he's likely to be pretty cranky. If he's in a mood he'll make snaky perfume choices for people which means I'm going to need to read up on Chinese flowers and their meanings.

MEMORY STATUS: He remembers everything, he's fine, everything's fine.

GENERAL PLANS: Probably going to try and figure out what exactly is going on with time being once again messed up in here.

WHO IS YOUR CHARACTER IN YANCAI? he's a food stall owner, which is going to be a disaster for everyone except him. For those who are new to the show, Xie Lian's cooking is very dangerous. It is canonly known to put trained cultivators in comas and literally disable gods. He himself has no trouble eating it, but then, he literally cannot die so take that as you will. Anyway, food poisoning incoming for anyone who comes to buy food from him.

His haunting will be scary to him at first in a general way, but it will get worse once he regains his actual memories since it relates to basically the scariest time in his life when he almost became a supreme calamity.

MEMORY STATUS: He'll fully believe he's a villager for at least a few days.

GENERAL PLANS: probably investigating the hauntings and ghosts once memories are back because that's more up his alley.

The whole thing has kind of gone tits up and she's largely fine with that; the stress of running it was a shitshow, what's left of the booze stores will dwindle more slowly with the girls sent packing, and right now her only worry is what her husband Joel is going to think when he gets back. In general an upstanding and happy contributor to the village and eager to start her next venture; she's an accomplished businesswoman, after all, there's always some new hustle that conveniently serves the needs of the people. To know her is to love her, and all.

She is living with Jimmy McGill, Pietro Maximoff, Licyn Mansbane, and Claire Fraser.

MEMORY STATUS: Lost in the sauce. The other life she periodically "imagines" is vile and joyless and troublesome, and she's not very interested in entertaining it as reality. She's a nice lady, okay!!

I'm imagining this as a lil bit of a shaman-y communes-with-nature vibes, you know, like spiderwebby shawls beaded with seashells, hand-worked mother of pearl jewelry, thinks the water has memory, yadda yadda, but it's not totally woowoo. She's a sharp person, and she really can tell from the shape of the waves and the swells and the clouds and the winds and the animal behaviour and the smell of the air what weather is coming.

That said, she is a little petty about this power. Cross her and you might as well just swim. And because of all these comings and goings, she's quite connected, socially, and she keeps tabs on just about everyone.

MEMORY STATUS: Believes she's lived here 4ever, but lowkey wondering why she doesn't really connect with nature like she used to :\

WHO IS YOUR CHARACTER IN YANCAI? Jesse is, apparently, "the runner of a candle MLM operation, seeking to sell beautiful sea salt scented candles in a village already overrun by water". He lives in "a house of goodness and godliness, where many men come to confess their sins and request assistance to be brought back onto the righteous path" along with roommates Stephanivien, Xie Yun, and Eda Clawthorne. He'll be haunted by the White Woman wherein he wakes up choking and doesn't stop until he accepts the drugs she feeds him, after which he hears his deceased ex-girlfriend Jane choking and crying out as he starts to feel better (yiiiikes). How will he deal with this? Well, the candle operation is going to be a piece of cake for him. He's the kind of guy who can sell sand to a beach. I have a lot of plotting ideas for that, which I'll go into below in "general plans". As far as his housing goes, well, he has a decent head on his shoulders, so while he doesn't think he's the right person to go to for advice, you could be far worse off. He's the moral compass in canon, and very much an antihero. He'll try his best not to steer you wrong should you come to him seeking advice. At the very least, he won't judge you. He doesn't know any of his roommates from his arrival on The Sandman, so I'm looking forward to any and all new CR! As far as the haunting goes, it's going to hit him really hard when it comes. Hopefully someone'll be able to get him out of the funk he gets into once it all goes down.

MEMORY STATUS: His memories are unchanged, but he feels like he belongs in the village and generally wants to stay.

GENERAL PLANS: I have some specific and general ideas for this candle MLM operation. One, he'll likely be hitting up Jimmy McGill for his lending services. Someone at the head of an operation wants to look/seem successful in order to recruit others into his pyramid scheme business.

He'll definitely be looking for people to both sell candles to and to recruit as workers.

When he runs into Five and hears of him trying to recruit others into his fish-god religion, he'll take that opportunity to unload a bunch of his sea-salt scented candles. What better way to make an offering to a fish god than to light a sea-salt candle? Am I right?

Additionally, after discovering that there are four different entities haunting different people, Jesse'll start making candles of different colors--one for each of the hauntings (red for the red lady, white for the white woman, yellow for the milk-toothed babes, green for the lumberjack, and black for the man in black). They allegedly keep the hauntings at bay.

And here's where another character comes into play: when Jesse discovers that his roommate Stephanivien isn't haunted by an entity, he'll make sure to set up a display of his candles in Stephanivien's blacksmith workshop and credit the candles to his lack of haunting.

These are some general ideas, and I'm up for any and all suggestions, etc. Give me all the CR!

I'm very excited about this business venture, please bear witness to Five's STAGGERING lack of people skills and help him not get every door shut in his face. The only reason he gets anywhere is his ability to teleport inside, but that doesn't always go over well.

WHO IS YOUR CHARACTER IN YANCAI? There are only two things certain in this world -- death and taxes. Nacho is a tax collector, which, as I'm sure you can guess, doesn't exactly make him popular with the locals. He's an intimidating figure, because he has ways of getting what you owe out of you.

How demanding or lenient he is depends on you. He will try, mostly, to be ethical about it, in the spirit of trying to have the kind of "legitimate", law-abiding job that his dad might want him to have.

BUT try to play him for a fool and you might end up owing 10% more. Now it's 15% more. Now 30% more. Wanna keep pushing your luck, son?

On the other hand, if you're a struggling single parent, an orphaned child, or just genuinely down on your luck, he will assuredly let you slide. Shhh. Don't tell anyone he's a soft touch, okay?

He lives at The Dancing Seagull with Mo Ran, America Chavez, Xie Lian, Kumoi Yuuri! Housemates, never fear -- if Nacho's around when obnoxious locals come by ringing bells, he'll be happy to chase them off for you so you can get your beauty rest.

He will be haunted by The Lumberjack, who speaks in the voice of his father. The first time this happens, he's going to go looking for his dad, just in case. He won't find anyone, and he won't go looking again after not finding anybody the first time. If anyone wants to make sure he doesn't get lost wandering around e v e r y w h e r e looking for dear old Dad,
though, that'd be great...!

(Oh, and maybe stay out of his room. It'll smell like an upholstery shop...)

MEMORY STATUS: Memories unchanged, but feels a deep sense of rightness about staying in the village.

WHO IS YOUR CHARACTER IN YANCAI? River gets to be a cordwainer, which she will love/hate. Door-to-door sales of something absolutely no one (probably) wants to buy is right up her alley though, tbh, and she'll happily use that to try to get to know some people, maybe make some friends, further incorporate herself.

MEMORY STATUS: 3. Memories unchanged.

GENERAL PLANS: This is me diving back in after Life did a whole thing, so I'm really just going to roll with it. River will probably go all in with the assigned role, just because it gives her a great excuse to talk to people and maybe annoy them and get a little bit in their business at the same time. Her memory is basically fine, so if anyone wants a counter for their Not Fine memories, I can offer her for that. She's not the best at breaking things gently. She's going to be haunted by the man in black, and I'm open to others seeing/noticing that.
