YANCAI: THE RECKONING

When last we left Yancai, five years in the past, a vengeful Huntress had decided to unleash undead upon the village in retaliation for her mistreatment. Tearing her own heart out, she cut it in slivers for young witch Miang-Si to hide — laying down the groundwork for magic that would bring back the dead to renew their hostilities. Local hedge witches, the ladies of the lake, decided they can only fend off the massacre by sending the village back in time, forcing residents to relive the same five-year period in blissful ignorance, robbing the moon of some of her power and sacrificing some of their own witch kind. A difficult gambit. Recovering from the first wave of undead, Yancai held an auction to raise funds at the House of Commerce — where the village’s beacon rests, entirely operational.

AFTERMATH

Though urged otherwise, the party couldn’t resist interfering and inevitably breaking Yancai’s time loop.

Through coaxing and conversation, the Doctor, Five, Wrath and Lockwood persuade the Man in Black not to participate in the time and memory rite of the ladies of the lake, with the Lumberjack also agreeing to discourage other witches from doing so. Wrathion and Caitlyn convince Miang-Si to speak to the ladies of the lake and also talk them down from their ritual — while Wrath, Emilia, Wei Wuxian and Beitang Moran disrupt the lunar sorcery, releasing mother moon from the witches’ thrall.

Many party members scavenge, procure and — in Red and Wrathion’s cases — consume parts of the Huntress’ heart, destroying the anchors of the spell that would have unleashed fresh legions of undead upon Yancai. Unexpectedly, in exchange for Jon Snow’s information about her son, the Huntress agrees not to renew hostilities against Yancai.

The village’s fate might be unknown — but at least now it is free.

The party’s sorceress Karsa summons everyone to the banquet of the House of Commons — where a transportation beacon can be accessed, after two keys were procured. Already, the reality of this timepoint is beginning to fracture, with elements and people of Yancai fluctuating between their states at various point in time: now young and hale, then withered, solid or decaying, freshly arrived or gone. Karsa successfully wakes the beacon, hastening everyone to step through the gateway. They’re enveloped in sizzling, volatile magic, bound home —

Only to instead arrive, as the Merchant foretold in a pocket dimension of stolen time: the House of Manouk

NOTES

Our next plot instalment, due out tomorrow, is a short event that doubles as a test drive in the timeless House of Manouk.

It will be followed by a short cooldown period, during which you’ll have the chance to vote on our upcoming Arc destination.

Happy Friday! Curtains are drawing on the Dream a little dream of her... travel arc, with the conclusion one cut away — warning for spoilers, if you're still threading out the mystery

IT WAS ALL A DREAM
As the team has been piecing together, there is something amiss with good Firo, and the numerous suggestions in answer to his ransom offer push M. le Bagade to accuse the renown heroine that she might be... a living dream. The Conductor threatens her expulsion, to the anguish of her sister Lita, who takes full responsibility. Firo, she says, was unaware — Lita, also a living dream, has been secretly feeding her stolen sedative herbs to induce sleep and make Firo think herself a 'normal' person.

Seeing her spouse mired in conflict, Prassenze emerges from where she has been changing appearance in the passenger crowd. A blank slate more than a person, she confesses she is also living dream, forged as a companion to Firo. As the party suspected, she has been using a dream thief to recreate herself on each wedding day and better suit beloved Firo and her companions. Sadly, Prassenze and the dream thief ran out of dream tokens to power their efforts, and Prassenze chose to hide away. Hugo — Natasha has learned, of the Merchant's homeland Ellethia — bashfully admits he is the dream thief, who created the perfect hero (Firo), her stalwart sister (Lita) and the blushing bride (Prassenze).

While the Conductor should remove living dreams from the train, Hugo patiently reminds him of the many years when he and his team allowed dream thieves to continue their work undeterred on the Sandman, for a price. To protect the train's reputation, the Conductor calls the incident closed. The group retires to their compartments — Firo and Prassenze agreeing to talk, Lita a little shattered, and Hugo... telling the Merchant's party that, if he had known what trouble they would cause, he would not have procured their tickets.

Betting results: 40,000 coins to Wei Wuxian and Dean each, 20,000 to Beitang Moran and Lan Sizhui each, 30,000 to Five.

ARC VI

We officially enter Arc VI on 15 May, when the group arrives in sunken village Yancai during a first log event — which doubles as a test drive meme.

Yancai location details are now live!

■ Courtesy of the Merchant, characters are assigned false identities/occupations and dwellings while in Yancai. Unrelated to the Merchant, they might be haunted. CTRL+F your character's name to learn their fate. The haunting & atonement are entirely optional — feel free to ignore or tweak.

■ A new NPC inbox will follow shortly.

■ Characters are coming into Arc VI with varying levels of false memories of being native to Yancai. These false memories are temporary and will dispel within days of arrival. During this period, characters can still sense they have a connection with their CR (as deeply or shallowly as you want), even if they have a diffuse sense of how it was formed. Ex: character A might know they love B, even if they don't recall B is their spouse of 50 years. They would (and should) be startled by this discrepancy in their memories.

■ the first Arc VI log will cover: a few days of acclimating to the village (and fully recovering character memories, where applicable), getting optionally haunted, exploring the lakes and and searching sunken territories for clues about the time-warping decay.

Hey guys! Sufficient activity wasn't found in April for:

Daenerys Targaryen | A Song of Ice & Fire — RECLAIMED
Vi | Arcane — NOW DRPPED
Merrin | Star Wars

Special reclaim accommodation has been agreed for River Song (Doctor Who) for additional activity in May & June.

Flag by 23:59 GMT on 5 May if you have any activity that wasn't factored, or if you'd like to talk about reclaiming. Thanks!

We're nearly entering the warm & holiday season, so just a brief refresher on the activity front that you cannot have both a hiatus and an AC strike in a three-month period (or double of either) unless extenuating circumstances have been discussed. Generally, if you take a hiatus but ultimately end up making activity anyway, the hiatus is no longer counted as using up one of your slots. Thanks!

UPDATES
■ The May calendar is now live!

Check out this tiny form by 23:59 GMT on 8 May to help customise your character's Arc VI role and assignments!

■ Applications reopen in May, so a numbers refresher: including the characters on the inactivity list, we are currently at 54 characters and 43 players in game. Our cap is 55 players.

■ As we prep to enter another sinister site, please don't hesitate to drop a line if you suffer from any particular creature/horror phobias we should try to keep out of event pictures or when content warn when linking out. All feedback there is screened.

Hello, hello! Eid Mubarak if you celebrate & happy Friday if you don't! Voting for our Arc VI destination has now closed and, with 23 votes in favour and 7 against, the winner by a waterslide is... The Sunken.

All hail our moist overlord.

Indicatively, Arc VI should last roughly 10 weeks and will kick off after part II of our train ride mystery — for which you will get further details on 24 April, along with a list of clues uncovered and shared ICly by their discoverers so far. There will be a test drive event & an app round after the train journey.

To help prepare your character's triage and entrance into the Arc VI moist madness, please optionally fill out the following at some point over the next two weeks:

Hi everyone! The recently kicked-off Dream a Little Dream of Her travel arc still has a second part to go, but choosing our Arc VI destination a bit in advance helps with mod prep. So, without further ado —

This is an out-of-character poll, with one vote per player. Please +1 one of the two options below by 23:59 GMT on 20 April.

ARC VI OPTIONS

THE SUNKEN

A fishermen’s village is slowly sinking into waters, decaying... back in time. Character memories are jumbled on arrival, but recover at night. Nothing dies, everything evolves.

SCOPE: exploration, personal atonement. Time travel and loss in time.

’HIGHLIGHTS’: the undead, sometimes under your bed, sometimes in your waters. Experiencing a village in multiple points in time. Blood magic, dystopia. What is wet is not your friend.
THE AUCTION

In a free city, warlords bid a fierce at auction, while dead factions plot, plan and rig the election of their new overlord. A prophet raises followers to protest the dead.

SCOPE: infiltration, manipulation, scouting, deceit. Gambling and negotiation. Less combat than politics.

’HIGHLIGHTS’: pretend to be a war faction or the latest dead tribe. Money raising. Too much tea and conversation. The very burning sun. Note: you will have to meddle proactively in the auction/election.

Vote in the comments for The Sunken or The Auction!

Separately, it's that time again — please find the character badges for Arc V: Alem below, or archived. If you've never done this before: grab and customise your badge wallet and people it with any badges from the general or Arc-specific set that you think describe your character's Arc experience so far! This is all for fun and laughs, so go as wild as you like!
