ALEM

Sound the drums, head on to war — seized citadel Alem has already been there for the lion's share of a year.

Under the Scavengers' guidance, the four sand worms the party captured gently graze underground corridors allowing the group to reach halfway up Mount Attevar. From there, they quickly infiltrate Alem through a bustling trade route.

Young King Deimar strikes a simple bargain: serve Alem in its bitter last days until inevitable downfall, and the citadel will grant access to its Beacon before the final evacuation is completed.

Sounds simple enough. Now, survive it.

Characters arrive today, with our first proper taste of event chaos due on 27-28 January. Get your character settled in, check out the setting and their assignment, and strike some CR:

Happy New Year! Wishing everyone a delightful, lucky, healthy and cheerful 2023!

Short and sweet on the admin update this round:

December was AC-free, but we return to regular activity requirements for January.

UPDATED: Story So Far with the last Arc IV + January calendar

■ The sand worms, desert & definitely-not-Sarlacc pit event of 6 January will double as a test drive meme... and an IC chance to get some valuable leverage, going into Arc V. Apps follow on 16-21 January — this time, they'll be open for anyone who has an invite or participates in the test drive meme.

Because of the tighter scheduled span of Arc V, this will probably be the only app cycle we hold until we’ve exited the Siege.

Speaking of...

ARC V: THE SIEGE

...is going to play out a little bit differently, over six to eight weeks. You’ll get full details later in the month, but a ticking countdown and territorial distribution across levels means small teams will have to take on a variety of mini-assignments against a backdrop of fusillades, ramming, curses and shattering defences. All hands on deck!

Not at all binding, but to get a sense of areas at interest — factor in your own OOC enthusiasm, and check in each of your characters at one of the relevant links below by 23:59 GMT on 22 January, if you play a character who:

■ Would manage to broker a cutthroat deal with ruthless passing merchants

■ Can & would play bodyguard to a king/prince

■ Is a medic, and wouldn’t mind spying on a patient

■ Would investigate supernatural murders at potential risk to oneself

■ Would stay behind to bitter end to hold up swarmed defences, to bide other people time to flee.

■ Can & would get actively involved in manipulating succession games, if needed last-minute.

■ Would try to run, in a cowardly but sensible manner.

■ Would go into the depths of local hell (note: this option is the most dangerous out of all of them.)

To confirm, this is just to give an indication of where to position your character and what to call on them for. You are not obliged to accept the mission just because you checked in here. It also doesn’t mean you cannot play something you didn’t check in for, later.

Separately, if you don’t mind providing some additional details, to help prep your character for the Siege...

Many thanks!

Happy holidays, if you're celebrating! With 18 to 15 votes in favour, the people hath spoken: Arc V will head into the The Siege. A one-off desert travel mission will precede it for two-three weeks, to honour the tight voting margin and serve as the stage of our January test drive meme. There will be sand and off-brand Sarlacc pits.

We'll iron out Siege infiltration, espionage, trade/negotiation and ole fighting opportunities next month. Enjoy the cooldown SoL peace while it lasts! On that note:

WREATHS & WRAITHS

As promised: the staff of the haunted Silent Night inn prepare to greet the new year with wreaths, garlands and decorations that stealthily invade guest spaces. Until 4 January, characters can optionally encounter:

opiate mistletoe that generates six hours of profound and unerring contentment. You are one with the world, the world is not combusting. Peace. Serenity. Cats. Joy.

pussy willow: catnip to a majority of the inn's friendly, if gregarious ghosts, who simply must talk your ears off now.

wolf's holly: dainty, pristine, jovial and... sadly carnivorous and prone to growing tendrils. Now, how did this slip in? It's yet young, but might try to snare you in a tentacle hug while it grows out its pathetic, dull baby teeth. Kick it off.

winter dandelions that tempt you to make a wish aloud and blow them for good luck. Some inn keepers say, the more public your proclamation, the likelier your wish will come true! *This is false advertisement.

Hello, hello! Happy nearly-there-almost-end-of-the-year-we-sort-of-made-it! You've still got a few weeks of Silent Night cooldown ICly, but with the party set to progress onto Arc V in early January — you can cast your vote for our next destination!

This is an out-of-character poll, with one vote per player. Please +1 one of the two options below by 23:59 GMT on 27 December. You can also give a shout if you think your character might need accommodations for anything or want to brainstorm some specific ideas for them. Thank you!
